Questions we get asked
We have a backup already. Is that not enough?
It depends entirely on whether anyone has ever restored from it. A large share of the failed backups we find had been reporting success for months while backing up the wrong thing, or nothing at all. Having a backup and having a recovery are two different states, and the only way to know which one you are in is to test it.
How long would it take to get us running again?
That depends on what failed and how much data is involved, and any provider who gives you a single number without having seen your environment is guessing. What we will do is look at your setup, give you the realistic figure, and then design toward a target you choose rather than one you inherited by accident.
If ransomware encrypts everything, does it encrypt the backups too?
That is exactly what it tries to do, and it is why air-gapped copies matter so much. A backup reachable from the network it is protecting is a backup an attacker can destroy on the way through. Separated copies are the difference between an expensive week and the end of the business.
What actually needs backing up? We are not sure what we have.
Almost nobody is, and the gaps are remarkably consistent: a folder on somebody's desktop, data inside an application nobody thought of as a database, and cloud accounts everyone assumed the provider was backing up. Microsoft 365 is the classic one, where deleted items are gone for good after a retention window most people have never looked at. Finding those is part of the job.
Why is this part of a monthly agreement rather than a one-time setup?
Because a backup left alone stops working. Software updates, new servers, moved folders and expired credentials all break backup jobs silently, and silently is the dangerous part. The monthly work is the monitoring and the recovery testing. The installation is the easy bit.
How likely is this really?
