Why measurement matters
Almost every bad wireless network we are called to look at was installed by guesswork. Access points were mounted where it was convenient, on default settings, and the result works in the room where the installer stood.
A site survey measures what actually happens in your building: where signal reaches, where it does not, where units interfere with each other, and what other equipment is competing for the same airspace. Heat mapping turns that into a diagram, which is also the fastest way to end a disagreement about whether the WiFi is genuinely bad.

What goes wrong, and why it is rarely the router
Four causes account for most of the wireless complaints we are called about. Coverage gaps, where signal never reached the far end of the building and staff have learned to walk somewhere else to send an email. Interference, where access points fight each other or share airspace with other equipment. Sticky clients, where a laptop clings to a distant unit instead of switching to the strong one overhead. And capacity, where the coverage is fine but forty devices are contending for a connection sized for ten.
None of those is fixed by replacing the router, which is usually the first thing tried. They are fixed by measuring, then changing placement, channels, power levels, and sometimes the number of units. That is unglamorous work and it is the difference between a network people complain about and one nobody mentions.
Questions we get asked
Why does our WiFi work in some parts of the building and not others?
Because the coverage was almost certainly guessed rather than measured. Walls, racking, metal and distance all absorb signal, and an access point that performs well in an open office does very little through a concrete wall. Measuring where the signal actually lands is exactly what a site survey is for.
Can we just add more access points?
Sometimes, but adding them without a plan often makes things worse. Two units on the same channel interfere with each other, and devices hold onto a weak connection instead of moving to a stronger one. More hardware in the wrong places buys you a slower network that looks better on paper.
What is a heat map?
A picture of where your wireless signal actually reaches, measured inside your building rather than predicted from a floor plan. It shows dead spots, overlap and interference, and it turns an argument about whether the WiFi is bad into a diagram everyone can look at together.
Our warehouse layout changes. Does the wireless need redoing every time?
Not redoing, but re-checking. Racking and inventory change how signal moves, so coverage that worked last year may not work now. This is completely normal in a warehouse and it is not a sign the original work was wrong. It is one of the more common call-outs we get across El Paso's industrial corridors.
Can guests be on the WiFi safely?
Yes, on a separate network that cannot reach your business systems. Guest access sharing the same network as your servers is one of the more common findings in our assessments and one of the easier things to put right, so it is worth asking us to check even if nothing else changes.
