What this covers

Advice, delivered as a piece of work rather than a subscription. You have a decision to make or a situation to understand, and you need someone who has seen it before and has no reason to tell you anything but the truth about it.

Typical engagements are an assessment of what you have, a plan for what to do next, a technology selection between two or three options, a review of someone else's proposal, or planning around a move, an expansion, or an acquisition.

Who it is for

Businesses with a real IT decision and nobody internal whose job it is to make it. Also companies that already have an IT person or provider and want an independent read before committing to something large.

If what you actually need is someone to keep things running day to day, that is managed IT services instead, and we will tell you so rather than selling you an assessment.

What is included

Environment assessment

An inventory of what you are actually running, what condition it is in, what is out of support, and what is about to become a problem. Written plainly, not as a vendor report.

Technology roadmap

A sequence and a rough budget, so replacements land as planned expenses rather than emergencies. Most businesses find the value here is knowing what not to spend money on this year.

Vendor and quote review

An independent read on a proposal: what it includes, what it quietly excludes, and whether the pricing is normal for this market.

Move, build-out, and expansion planning

The technology side of a new space, done early enough to matter. Frequently runs alongside network infrastructure work.

Security and compliance readiness

Where a customer contract or regulation has raised a requirement, an honest read on the gap. Related: compliance support.

The problem it solves

Technology decisions get made under two bad conditions: urgency and asymmetry. Something has failed and it has to be replaced this week, or the only person in the room who understands the options is the one selling them. Either way the business commits money for years based on a conversation it could not evaluate.

An outside assessment breaks that. It costs a fraction of the decision it informs, and its main output is often the reason not to buy the expensive thing.

How it works

  1. A conversation to define the actual question, which is often not the one you called about.
  2. A written scope and a fixed quote, so you know the cost before it starts.
  3. The work: inventory, interviews, review, analysis, whatever the question needs.
  4. A written deliverable in plain language, and a conversation to walk through it.
  5. Your decision. If you want us to carry it out, we will quote it separately.

Getting started

Call (915) 629-8888 and describe the decision you are facing. If it is small enough to answer on the phone, we will answer it on the phone.

Questions we get asked

How is this different from managed IT services?

Managed IT is ongoing responsibility for keeping things running. Consulting is a defined piece of work with an answer at the end: an assessment, a plan, a recommendation, a second opinion. You can buy either without the other, though plenty of businesses start with consulting and move into managed services once they know what they actually need.

We got a quote from another provider. Can you tell us if it is reasonable?

Yes, and it is one of the more common reasons people call. We will tell you what the quote covers, what it quietly leaves out, and whether the price sits in the normal range for El Paso. If it is a good quote we will say so and tell you to take it, and that happens more often than you might expect.

Do you have to sell us something at the end?

No. An engagement can end with a recommendation you take somewhere else entirely, or a recommendation to do nothing for now. Advice that always ends in a purchase is not advice, it is a sales call with a report attached.

We are moving offices. When should we involve you?

Before the lease is signed if you possibly can, and certainly before construction starts. Cable, power and carrier availability are cheap to plan and painfully expensive to retrofit. We have watched El Paso businesses sign a lease and then discover the building cannot deliver the internet service they had assumed, and by then there is no good fix.

Is this billed monthly like your other services?

No. Consulting is project work, scoped and quoted up front, because it has an end. The monthly agreement is for the things that never end.
